Summary
- 16 shipping containers carrying fruit fell overboard in the Solent.
- The P&O Cruises ship Iona was delayed departing Southampton.
- Eight containers held bananas, two plantain, one avocado.

The P&O Cruises ship Iona experienced a significant delay departing Southampton on Saturday due to an incident in the Solent. Sixteen shipping containers, carrying a substantial amount of fruit including bananas, plantain, and avocados, fell overboard from the cargo ship Baltic Klipper on December 6th.
This unexpected event prevented the 5,200-passenger vessel from leaving as scheduled for its 14-day voyage to Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands. The Maritime Coastguard Agency confirmed the incident occurred near the Nab Tower lighthouse, and no crew members on the cargo ship were harmed.
While two of the containers washed ashore at Selsey, authorities are coordinating the recovery efforts with the cargo ship's owners. Passengers aboard the Iona were eventually cleared to sail on Sunday lunchtime, after the disruption caused by the lost cargo.
