International disaster relief charity ShelterBox, founded in Cornwall, is preparing to deploy volunteers to Venezuela to provide emergency aid. The country has been struck by two severe earthquakes, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread building collapse. ShelterBox has a large pool of trained volunteers, many based in Cornwall, ready to assist in the response.
The charity has established hubs in Barbados and Panama, equipped with essential supplies such as tents and shelter kits. These kits are designed for repairing and constructing basic structures, alongside vital household items like solar lights and blankets. ShelterBox aims to support victims for an estimated two to three months.
Emergency co-ordinator Dave Raybould emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding when assisting families who have lost loved ones and possessions. The team plans to actively listen to community needs to ensure their aid is most effective. Raybould himself is expected to travel to Venezuela with a supply chain specialist soon, with other volunteers joining later.
