Sandra Blockley MBE, an 81-year-old who has raised more than £2 million for charity, has been deeply touched by her community's support after her home of 62 years was destroyed in a house fire. The blaze occurred on Church Street, Thurcroft, Rotherham, on Tuesday. Blockley, a recipient of a Pride of Britain award and an MBE for her extensive fundraising for cancer and dementia charities, found her property engulfed.
Her neighbours and local residents have quickly rallied, raising approximately £7,000 to help replace some of her lost belongings. Blockley described the response as overwhelming and tear-jerking, stating that the support received was a reflection of the love she has given to the community.
The fire is believed to have started accidentally in her shed and rapidly spread to the house. Firefighters battled the blaze for over seven hours. Blockley was out line dancing at the time of the incident and learned about the fire upon her return.
Blockley, who was preparing to move into temporary accommodation after staying in a hotel, conveyed her profound gratitude, highlighting that the community's solidarity meant the world to her and her family.
