A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, tragically claiming the lives of the Saavedra Caycedo family in Cali, one of the hardest-hit cities. Ana María Saavedra Caycedo survived the collapse, enduring hours trapped under rubble with severe arm injuries and a fractured pelvis. She emerged as the sole survivor from her immediate family.
Search and rescue efforts over days recovered the bodies of her parents, Vicky Caycedo and Jair Saavedra, found embracing. Her uncle Diego Caycedo and sisters Sofia and Isabella also perished. A family-organized fundraising campaign is now underway to support Ana María's long road to physical and emotional recovery and to help her restart her life.
The earthquake, the deadliest to hit Colombia in decades, has resulted in at least 294 confirmed deaths, with hundreds missing and thousands injured. It also caused widespread destruction, leveling over 100 buildings and destroying more than 12,000 homes, serving as a stark reminder of life's fragility.
