A fierce, hours-long fire significantly damaged the Embarcadero Apartments on Sullivan Road in College Park on Monday, leaving at least eight residents displaced. Firefighting units from College Park, Clayton County, Atlanta, and the City of South Fulton were engaged in a prolonged battle against the stubborn blaze.
Combating the flames proved challenging due to the building's age and multiple makeshift roofs, which allowed the fire to spread into void spaces. Strong, windy conditions further fueled the fire, requiring continuous dousing and significant effort to knock down the flames that reignited throughout the evening.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators are pointing to a potential accidental cause, with a candle left burning near combustible materials being the suspected origin. The American Red Cross is currently assisting the displaced residents with temporary shelter as they assess the extensive damage to their homes.
