12 Mar
Summary
- Residents report daily crashes or near-misses on West Street, Essex.
- A July 2025 incident saw a car flip, narrowly missing a jogger.
- Locals repeatedly request a speed limit reduction from 40mph to 30mph.

Residents of Coggeshall, Essex, are voicing grave concerns about a dangerous section of West Street, where they report accidents and near-misses occur almost daily. The current speed limit on this stretch is 40mph.
Footage captured in July 2025 illustrates the severity of the issue, showing a car losing control, flipping onto its side, and colliding with parked vehicles while damaging a building. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in this incident, though a jogger narrowly avoided being struck.
Local councillor Paul Thorogood has persistently petitioned Essex Highways to reduce the speed limit to 30mph between Coggeshall Town Football Club and the village center, citing numerous incidents and near-fatalities. He argues that reducing the speed limit is a necessary measure to prevent loss of life.
Other villagers echo these sentiments, with many expressing fear for their children's safety and describing the traffic situation as "scary" and "terrifying." Concerns are also rising about potential exacerbation of traffic problems if new housing developments proceed.
Essex Highways has acknowledged the concerns, stating that they regularly review local data, police reports, and resident feedback to identify patterns requiring road safety improvements. They indicated that works can be put forward for funding if sufficient evidence of recurring issues is presented.
