An 81-year-old man and his 76-year-old wife are recuperating at home following a severe collision with a teenage e-dirt bike rider in Coconut Grove. The incident occurred on January 11th, when the 15-year-old driver allegedly lost control and struck the pedestrians. The impact resulted in significant injuries: the husband sustained a head wound with bleeding on his brain, requiring 12 staples, and his wife fractured her ankle.
Both victims, Hank Klein and Lisa Sloat, are now undergoing therapy and rehabilitation. Klein described the crash as so severe he was knocked unconscious, while Sloat must keep her leg elevated and uses a walker. The couple is advocating for immediate changes, including age restrictions, registration for e-bikes, and enforcement of penalties. They also support a proposed bill to limit e-bike speeds in pedestrian areas and recommend mandatory insurance for such vehicles.
