Church Street Crumbles Under Waste Truck Weight
12 Oct
Summary
- Waste compactors caused a sinkhole on Church Street.
- The road surface is not designed for heavy vehicles.
- Repairs were completed by the BCCC the same day.
A recent incident on Bengaluru's Church Street highlighted the inadequacy of its surface for heavy waste trucks. Early Monday, two waste collection compactors drove onto the street, causing a portion of the carefully laid cobblestone surface to cave in, resulting in a sinkhole. The Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) promptly repaired the damage, filling the sinkhole and restoring the cobblestones by the evening.
Officials from the BCCC stated that heavy vehicles are prohibited on Church Street as its surface cannot withstand loads exceeding 10 tonnes. The drivers and their supervisors were reportedly unaware of this restriction. Church Street, redeveloped in 2017 and inaugurated as a pedestrian-friendly zone in 2018, features granite cobblestones and is popular for its cafés and shops.
