A Christmas Day sea swim in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, ended in tragedy with the deaths of two men. PE teacher Tom Johnson, 47, perished while attempting to save 63-year-old antiques dealer Matthew Upham.
Mr. Upham had bravely entered the rough sea again to rescue a distressed woman. Both men encountered severe difficulties within moments due to large swells and high winds. Hundreds of people on the beach witnessed the unfolding events.
The body of Mr. Johnson, a father of two and a teacher at New Hall School, was found nearly a month later on January 20. An inquest into his death has been opened. A fundraiser for his family has already raised £30,000.
Mr. Upham, known for his antique business and his friendship with singer Kate Bush, is still missing. His selfless act of returning to help the woman, despite having almost reached safety himself, is highlighted by witnesses and friends. The inquest into his death is yet to be opened.
