Glacial Lake Threat Recedes Near China-Nepal Border

The risk posed by a glacial lake near the China-Nepal border has lessened, as confirmed by Chinese authorities on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Satellite images taken between Thursday and Saturday morning revealed that the lake's surface area had decreased by 21,000 square meters, down to 99,000 square meters.

This reduction is attributed to water slowly flowing through the lake, which straddles the China-Nepal border. The lake was formed by debris from a glacier collapse earlier this week that triggered a devastating flood, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of people missing. Rescue operations are still underway.

Experts and authorities had warned of secondary disaster risks, particularly from the glacier debris lake, which threatened rescue efforts. China Anneng, a state-owned enterprise, deployed a specialized team to monitor the lake. An earlier overflow on Friday had temporarily halted rescue work.

Authorities are also monitoring a second, larger body of water at the glacier collapse site, estimated to be over 120,000 square meters, though its depth is unknown. Flood risks persist until both lakes are fully drained, according to Nepal's Disaster Management Authority.

As of Saturday morning, rescue workers were combing through debris in challenging weather conditions. China's official death toll rose to seven, with 554 individuals still missing. Nearly 500 villagers, construction workers, and 555 tourists had been evacuated.
