A horrific tragedy unfolded at the Deer Lake Athletic Club in Independence Township, Michigan, on Friday, January 30, 2026, when a four-year-old girl died after being left unattended in the facility's swimming pool. The child was pulled from the water by her own sister after two women, who had brought six children to the pool, allegedly left them unsupervised for approximately 35 minutes.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the women were reportedly in the club's bar area ordering food and drinks during the time the children were alone. Deputies found the young girl on the pool deck receiving CPR from bystanders. Paramedics transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard characterized the death as "horrific and tragic" and easily avoidable, emphasizing the critical need for dedicated adult supervision during swimming activities. The club expressed profound sadness over the incident and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation, which will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.
