In a shocking incident on Wednesday morning, four people were attacked by seven pit bull-type dogs in the Claiborne Woods neighborhood of Charlotte. The violent encounter occurred off Mount Holly Huntersville Road. Deputies were nearby when they heard a woman scream for help. Upon arrival, they witnessed dogs attacking her and subsequently intervened to aid the victims.
The attack left the woman and her husband injured, with the husband reportedly engaged in a struggle with the dogs to protect his wife. Other neighbors also sustained injuries, including another woman who was pulled to the ground by the pack. Efforts by bystanders to distract the animals, such as tossing dog food or brandishing a shovel, proved unsuccessful.
Law enforcement officers formed a protective line while Animal Control officers worked to retrieve the dogs. Despite attempts to deter them, including a Taser deployment and warning shots fired by a deputy, the dogs continued their aggression. A sheriff's deputy is credited with wounding two dogs, which reportedly ended the attacks and saved lives.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Animal Care and Control seized seven pit bull-type dogs from the scene. One dog was found deceased and will undergo rabies testing, while another that was Tased was captured alive. The dogs were not microchipped, and authorities are actively seeking their owner. The injured woman was transported to Atrium Health for treatment.
