Lifeboat charity axes popular swim due to safety fears
23 Oct
Summary
- Annual charity sea swim cancelled due to safety concerns.
- Four deaths off Yorkshire coast prompted the difficult decision.
- Charity prioritizes community safety over fundraising goals.
Hornsea Inshore Rescue has made the difficult decision to end its annual New Year's Day charity sea swim. This significant fundraising event has been axed due to safety concerns following the tragic loss of four lives off the Yorkshire coast in 2026.
The incidents included the deaths of a 15-year-old girl, her mother, and a passerby in January near Withernsea, and a 13-year-old boy drowning in August at Hornsea. The charity stated it could no longer justify encouraging participation in the North Sea, particularly during the harsh winter months.
As a lifesaving organization, Hornsea Inshore Rescue emphasized that community safety is its paramount responsibility. While acknowledging the swim as a major fundraising activity, the charity concluded that no amount of money is worth risking a life. Previous years also saw cancellations, including in 2025 due to sewage overflow events and earlier in 2026 due to high waves.
