24 Feb
Summary
- Cyclone Horacio is the first Category 5 storm globally in 2026.
- Winds reached 161 mph, forming over warm South Indian Ocean waters.
- Heavy swell warnings issued for Rodrigues Island near Madagascar.

As of Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Tropical Cyclone Horacio has become the first Category 5 storm of the year, forming over the South Indian Ocean.
The cyclone boasts sustained wind speeds of 161 mph, with recent satellite imagery revealing a compact and symmetrical structure. Warm ocean waters of 27-28 degrees Celsius, combined with moderate wind shear and strong upper-level outflow, are fueling its intensification.
Although far from mainland areas, Horacio poses a risk to the marine ecosystem and nearby islands. The Mauritius Meteorological Service issued a heavy swell warning for Rodrigues, anticipating waves as high as 7 meters that could impact coastal areas and lagoons.
Scientists note that climate change contributes to ocean warming, which in turn fosters stronger tropical cyclones. However, other factors also influence storm intensity.
