Carnival Lifeboat Snaps Off, Plunges Into Sea
21 Nov
Summary
- A lifeboat broke off the Carnival Dream ship while docked in Cozumel, Mexico.
- The incident occurred during an unmanned test of the lifeboat's lowering mechanism.
- No injuries were reported due to the lifeboat falling into the water.

A lifeboat on the Carnival Dream cruise ship unexpectedly broke away from the vessel while it was docked in Cozumel, Mexico, on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time during a routine unmanned test of the lifeboat's lowering system.
Witnesses reported seeing the lifeboat's front half snap off and plunge into the water below. The Carnival Dream was fortunately docked on its port side, meaning the detached lifeboat fell into the sea rather than onto the ship or dock. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the event, explaining that a latch caught on a cable during the test, leading to the lifeboat's detachment.
No individuals were injured during this alarming event, as the lifeboat was unmanned at the time of the test. Carnival stated that all their ships carry an excess of required life-saving equipment and that lifeboats undergo regular testing to ensure operational readiness. This incident follows a similar event on another cruise line in 2022.
