Careless Tourist Ignites Blaze at Iconic Chinese Temple

On November 12th, 2025, a fire broke out at the Wenchang Pavilion on Fenghuang Mountain in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, China. Dramatic footage captured the three-story building engulfed in orange flames, with thick clouds of black smoke drifting into the sky. Large chunks of the wooden roof tumbled to the ground as the temple fell to pieces amid the blaze.

Investigators have determined that the fire was caused by a visitor's improper use of incense and candles. Officials assured that the pavilion, which was built in 2009, contained no cultural relics, and the surrounding forest areas were unaffected. The neighboring Yongqing Temple had been managing the pavilion since its completion.

While the fire did not result in any casualties, the damage to the iconic structure is significant.
