Canal Leak Forces New Closure After Collapse
12 Sep
Summary
- A new canal leak has forced a temporary closure near a major collapse site.
- Repair work on the collapsed embankment is expected to finish by February.
- The repair of the 200-year-old structure is estimated to cost around £10 million.
A recent leak has necessitated the temporary closure of a section of the Llangollen Canal in Whitchurch, Shropshire. This closure occurs approximately nine months after a significant embankment collapse in December of the previous year. The Canal and River Trust (CRT) has been undertaking repair work on the 200-year-old structure.
The discovered leak is situated on the canal south of the ongoing repair efforts, prompting the CRT to close the affected stretch known as the Arm. All boat owners moored in this area have been contacted to discuss their options, which include remaining in place or relocating to alternative moorings.
Despite the setback, the Whitchurch Waterway Trust (WWT) expressed understanding, acknowledging the challenges of renovating historic infrastructure. They are collaborating with the CRT project team to achieve the best outcomes. The collapsed embankment has been rebuilt and reinforced, with full repair completion anticipated by February and an estimated cost of £10 million.
