The tremor, which struck at 9:49 p.m. PT near Susanville, California, prompted widespread ShakeAlert notifications on mobile devices, urging people to 'drop, cover, and hold on.'
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 5.6 miles, intensifying the surface shaking experienced by many. While the initial magnitude was reported as 5.3, it was later revised to 4.9 by the USGS. Despite the tremors being felt across a wide area, including cities like Reno and Sacramento, no damage or injuries have been reported.
Since the main quake, the USGS has detected at least six aftershocks. The agency forecasts a 60 percent chance of a 3.0 magnitude or higher aftershock in the coming week. This seismic activity occurs within the seismically active Basin and Range region, a known area for moderate earthquakes.
