Fullerton police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student, Anthony Joseph Blas, who died from suspected alcohol poisoning. Emergency services were alerted when Blas was dropped off unconscious at St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight on Sunday, where he was pronounced dead.
He had reportedly attended an unaffiliated fraternity gathering near Associated Road and Milton Avenue earlier that evening. While alcohol consumption is believed to be a factor, the official cause of death is still pending. Law enforcement has stated they do not suspect hazing or foul play.
This incident is the second recent tragedy for the Cal State Fullerton community. It follows the death of soccer player Lauren Turner, who passed away in November after a severe accident in September. Turner, a 19-year-old student, was critically injured while riding an e-scooter and succumbed to her injuries after weeks in intensive care.
Investigators are urging anyone with information regarding Blas's death to contact Detective Eric Carrillo or Orange County Crime Stoppers. Tributes have begun to emerge honoring Blas.
