Two men, Martyn Pope and Dean Hollands, were among the first responders to a bus crash that occurred on the A484 near the Kidwelly roundabout in Carmarthenshire. Arriving shortly after the X11 service overturned, they immediately used tools from their van to break windows and force open doors, enabling them to rescue trapped passengers.
The incident resulted in 19 injuries, and six individuals were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, no life-threatening injuries were reported by the police. The mother of a 17-year-old passenger, Sally-Ann Morgan Smith, highlighted the immense kindness shown by strangers and expressed her gratitude.
Pope and Hollands described the scene as chaotic, with passengers crying and screaming. They described a 15-20ft drop from the overturned bus into the field. Local farmer Jacko Thomas, who rents the field, also assisted in ferrying injured individuals away in his pickup truck and farm buggy.
Connor, Morgan Smith's son, was traveling to Swansea when the crash happened. Although shaken and sustaining injuries to his knee and arm, he managed to activate an emergency exit. His mother was particularly proud of his actions and the support offered by bystanders, including one who shared water.
