A private sleeper bus traveling from Chennai to Madurai caught fire on the national highway near Perambalur in the early hours of Saturday. The bus, carrying 23 passengers, departed Chennai around midnight. The driver, Ibrahim, noticed smoke emanating from the front of the bus around 5:30 a.m. near Ayan Peraiyur village.
He immediately stopped the bus, alerted the passengers, and ensured everyone evacuated safely before flames rapidly spread. Firefighters from Veppur and Perambalur stations arrived and battled the blaze, which had already consumed the entire vehicle. The fire was brought under control by 7 a.m., leaving the bus a charred wreck.
The incident caused significant traffic disruption on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway. Police diverted traffic and removed the bus wreckage. Authorities also assisted the passengers in arranging alternative transportation to continue their journey. Mangalamedu police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the fire.
