Burning Man Sees Second Death Amidst Desert Chaos
6 Sep
Summary
- A second participant died Saturday at the Burning Man gathering.
- The festival has faced severe weather, turning the playa into mud.
- Authorities reported 34 arrests for drug offenses as of Friday.
Organizers of the Burning Man festival confirmed a second participant death on Saturday, September 6, 2026. The deceased, 60-year-old Craig Mann, was found unresponsive in his camp. This incident follows the death of another participant earlier in the week, who experienced a medical emergency and was pronounced dead at the festival's onsite emergency center.
The event, scheduled to conclude on September 7, 2026, has been marred by severe weather. Heavy rainfall transformed parts of the Black Rock Desert playa into thick mud, leading to the temporary closure of the festival's main entrance and exit, as well as the onsite airport. Attendees were advised to remain in Reno until conditions improved.
Beyond the weather and fatalities, the festival has seen other controversies. As of Friday morning, authorities had made 34 arrests for drug sales or trafficking, with one arrest for domestic violence. Additionally, a Christian missionary camp was evicted due to alleged privacy and consent violations, which the camp members dispute.
The year 2026 also marks the anniversary of a previous death at the festival, the fatal stabbing of Vadim Kruglov in August 2025. A cause of death for the two recent participants has not yet been disclosed.
