A tragic incident unfolded on October 22, 2025, when a British man and his friend drowned while surfing at Frankston Beach in Melbourne, Australia. According to the authorities, the two men were caught in strong winds and rough seas that swept them out to sea.
The emergency services were alerted around 5 pm that day, after reports of two men in trouble in the water. It is believed that one of the men was surfing when his board snapped, and his friend, who was known to him, jumped into the water to try and help. However, both men soon found themselves struggling against the powerful conditions.
Tragically, despite the efforts of the police helicopter to winch the men to safety, they died in the water. The men, aged 36 and 43, were both residents of Frankston, with the British national being the 36-year-old.
The incident occurred during a day of severe weather across the state of Victoria, with wind gusts reaching over 130 kph at Wilsons Promontory, just southeast of Melbourne. The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a severe weather warning, and the local mayor, Kris Bolam, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the need for the community to heed weather warnings and stay safe, especially during hazardous conditions.
The mayor also stated that Frankston City Council would be enhancing its beach and foreshore safety measures, including increased patrols, signage, and communication, to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
