A British man, Paul Grant, is in critical condition in a Spanish hospital after a severe head injury sustained shortly after arriving for a family holiday in Lanzarote. The 43-year-old waiter suffered a seizure and hit his head on a wall in his hotel room on the first night of the trip.
His family discovered him bleeding and disoriented. He was initially taken to a local hospital, but due to the severity of his brain bleed and pressure, he was airlifted to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín.
Surgeons performed emergency surgery to remove the right side of his skull to alleviate dangerous brain pressure. He remains sedated in intensive care, and his family is facing mounting expenses for flights and accommodation to remain by his bedside.
Grant had experienced a seizure a couple of months prior after being mugged in Newcastle, an incident from which his family feels he had not fully recovered. His sister has launched a GoFundMe to help cover the unexpected costs associated with his critical condition and prolonged hospital stay.
