A dangerous wedding prank has left a bridesmaid with a fractured vertebra. The incident occurred in October 2023 when the 20-year-old, identified as Zhang, was subjected to 'hunnao,' a traditional Chinese wedding hazing custom.
During the ceremony, Zhang was allegedly cornered by 10 men, including groomsmen. She was dragged from a closet and then tossed in the air using a bedsheet. The second attempt resulted in her falling onto the floor, causing the severe spinal injury.
She was hospitalized for 18 days and diagnosed with a burst fracture of her first lumbar vertebra. A subsequent appraisal determined her injury led to a 20% disability rate.
Zhang sought approximately $40,000 from the newlyweds and nine participants. A court ruled the newlyweds responsible for 40% of the compensation for failing to stop the hazing, while the groomsmen covered the remaining 60%. The total awarded compensation amounted to nearly $34,000.
