A 12-year-old boy sustained severe burns requiring a skin graft after a squishy toy reportedly exploded. The incident occurred on Friday, July 1, when the toy, a NeeDoh cube bought from Lidl, was left on a sunny windowsill. Hot goo spilled from the toy onto the boy's foot, causing it to blister and lose sensation.
Doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital diagnosed full dermal burns. The schoolboy underwent a skin graft on July 20, where skin from his thigh was used to repair the damage. His mother believes the toy's contents became dangerously hot due to direct sunlight.
NeeDoh manufacturer Schylling Toys warns against heating or microwaving their products and advises against leaving them in direct sunlight. Lidl stated the toy complied with safety standards and that packaging included usage and safety instructions.
