A tragic accident claimed the life of two-year-old Xielo Maruziva, who fell into Leicester's River Soar on February 18, 2024. His body was recovered nearly four months later, on June 6, 2024, by council workers clearing debris from a bridge. This discovery followed an extensive search operation, described as the largest of its kind in the UK.
The jury at Leicester Coroner's Court concluded that Xielo's fall into the water was accidental. Evidence presented indicated that the boy was walking ahead of his aunts when he disappeared into the river. Despite his father's immediate and desperate efforts to find him, the search proved in vain.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive suggested that preventative measures, such as flood warning signage or fencing, could have potentially saved the child's life. Following the incident, Leicester City Council installed such safety measures at Packhorse Bridge, where the accident occurred, although this evidence was not part of the jury's conclusion.
