Four-year-old Kassim Benouali and his two-year-old brother Sadek died tragically during a record-breaking heatwave in France. The boys suffered cardiac arrests after being trapped inside a car, where temperatures are estimated to have climbed as high as 70C.
Their mother, Wafa El Boubkari, discovered the unresponsive children around 1 pm in Carpentras. Prosecutors are investigating the circumstances, with initial reports suggesting the children may have locked themselves in the vehicle. The mother has reportedly given several versions of events.
A preliminary postmortem confirmed the boys died from dehydration caused by excessive heat exposure. The incident has caused widespread grief, with friends and family describing the mother as a hardworking woman and a good mother dealing with many personal issues.
A funeral for the two young boys was held on Friday at Carpentras Mosque. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths is ongoing.
