On August 1st, Phoenix firefighters executed a critical rescue of a 10-year-old boy stranded on Camelback Mountain. The child became overheated while hiking with his parents, prompting an emergency response.
Crews were dispatched to the Echo Canyon Trailhead around 11 a.m. after receiving reports of the heat-related medical issue. Firefighters reached the boy and used a specialized single-wheeled cart to safely transport him down the mountain.
The young hiker was subsequently transferred to an ambulance and taken to a local hospital, where he was reported in stable condition. This rescue happened as Phoenix grappled with an extreme heat warning and a forecast high of 116 degrees.
In response to the dangerous temperatures, the city had implemented closures for Echo Canyon and other mountain trails from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 3rd, advising against hiking during these high-heat periods.
