A devastating accident claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy, Matteo Brandimarti, during a family holiday in Italy over Easter weekend. The tragedy unfolded at the spa of the Duca di Montefeltro Hotel in Pennabilli, near Rimini, on Easter Sunday. While using the jacuzzi, Matteo's leg became trapped in the filter nozzle due to the active hydromassage function.
He was submerged for approximately five minutes before hotel staff managed to switch off the pump, freeing him. Emergency services arrived promptly and initiated CPR, successfully reviving his heart. He was airlifted to a hospital and placed on life support.
Tragically, on April 9, Matteo was declared brain dead due to severe brain damage caused by hypoxia. His parents have consented to organ donation. The Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation into involuntary manslaughter, examining potential safety flaws in the hot tub's design, particularly the nozzle grilles.
The hotel's pool area remains closed as the investigation continues. Safety officials are scrutinizing the hot tub system for design irregularities. The family has received an outpouring of condolences following the incident.
