A week-long search for Tory J. Raether concluded with the recovery of his body from the Snake River. Raether, originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, went missing on Saturday, July 4, 2026, after jumping into the river at the popular Jumping Rock spot. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
The 55-year-old investment officer began to struggle against the river's current, and companions who were with him were unable to save him. Raether had been visiting his daughter in Jackson, Wyoming, with his wife and another daughter when the tragedy occurred.
Star Valley Search & Rescue conducted extensive daily searches using various watercraft and drones. The search area expanded into the Palisades Reservoir after several days. On Saturday, July 11, 2026, campers discovered Raether's body from the shore near the McCoy Creek campground.
Authorities were alerted, and due to the proximity of search teams already on the water, Raether's body was quickly recovered. Friends described Raether as deeply fond of the Jackson Hole region, calling it one of his favorite places in the country.
