A glacial lake outburst in Bhutan, occurring on Thursday evening, has prompted urgent evacuations and flood alerts in neighbouring India. Over 10,000 individuals in West Bengal's Alipurduar district have been relocated to shelters or safer locations as a precautionary measure. The Sankosh river system, which connects Bhutan to India, has been placed on a red alert due to fears of a sudden flood surge originating from the ruptured Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan's Gasa district.
The floodwaters have already caused damage to roads and irrigation infrastructure within Bhutan. Communities situated along the Sankosh river and its tributaries have been advised to move away from vulnerable riverbanks. Responding to the emergency, disaster management personnel, including the NDRF and SDRF, have been mobilized in vulnerable areas. Police have assured residents that the situation is under control, though the red alert remains in effect.
