Summary
- A new database helps emergency responders identify vulnerable residents.
- The voluntary database supports those with mobility or communication challenges.
- The RDEK initiative aims to improve crisis assistance for residents.

As British Columbia braces for another challenging wildfire season, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has introduced a new initiative to support its most vulnerable citizens. The Vulnerable Persons Database is a confidential and voluntary system designed to alert emergency responders to individuals who may require additional assistance during a crisis.
This program aims to provide a heads-up to first responders regarding addresses where extra care might be necessary. Eligibility includes individuals facing challenges such as mobility, hearing, or vision impairments, learning disabilities, mental health issues, or limited internet or vehicle access. The RDEK noted that a previous evacuation alert in Kimberly highlighted the need for such a service, revealing many residents who required unacknowledged assistance.
Disability Alliance B.C. has expressed support for the program, aligning with their previous recommendations for emergency planning. They advocate for proactively identifying individuals with disabilities, pre-planning transportation for those with mobility challenges, providing information in alternative formats, and involving disabled individuals in the planning process. The RDEK's database is not intended for those already under 24-hour care by Interior Health. Residents can sign up online or by calling 250-426-2188.
