With the monsoon season imminent, the Water Resources Department (WRD) in Barak Valley has escalated its flood preparedness measures. The focus is on ensuring the safety of embankments and establishing rapid response systems to mitigate flood risks.
In a high-level meeting in Silchar, officials were directed to maintain constant vigilance and ensure all preventive infrastructure is in place before the onset of heavy rainfall. Extensive field surveys have been concluded across Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts.
The department has reviewed detailed reports on embankment conditions along major rivers and tributaries, identifying critical areas needing immediate attention. A senior WRD official noted that the primary phase of the flood management plan is finished, with continuous monitoring of weakened embankments.
To bolster emergency response capabilities, a 24x7 control room will become operational from May 1. Strategic stockpiling of sandbags and geo-bags has commenced to swiftly address any breaches or leaks. Officials stressed the importance of immediate corrective actions for any embankment found in a precarious state.
