Bangladesh Floods: 44 Dead, 2.5 Lakh Families Displaced
12 Jul
Summary
- Over 2.5 lakh families displaced by floods and landslips across Bangladesh.
- Army deployed to aid relief efforts in seven worst-hit districts.
- Torrential rains cause severe inundation in capital Dhaka and other cities.

Torrential monsoon rains have led to severe flooding and landslips across Bangladesh, resulting in at least 44 deaths as of Saturday evening, July 11, 2026. The deluge has displaced an estimated 2,67,000 families, with many seeking refuge in over 1,100 temporary shelters. Some casualties were due to landslips, while others drowned or were washed away by overflowing rivers. The government has mobilized the army, navy, and air force to conduct relief operations in seven critically impacted districts, supported by local NGOs. Significant rainfall, including 76 mm in Dhaka between midnight and 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, has inundated urban areas and paralyzed life in the capital and Chattogram.
Rivers in the northeastern Meghna and southeastern Hill Basins are swollen due to upstream water and heavy monsoon rains. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre predicts further flooding in northern and northwestern districts as several river monitoring stations have surpassed danger levels. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for the Sylhet, Rangpur, and Mymensingh divisions, as well as adjoining Indian states, over the next 24 to 48 hours. In a tragic incident earlier in the week, seven Rohingya children and their teacher died in a landslip at the Cox's Bazar refugee camp.
