Oil Slick Returns to Baltimore's Inner Harbor
27 Jun
Summary
- Oil was observed in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Friday morning.
- Environmental officials are investigating the spill's source.
- Previous spills include thousands of gallons of diesel in 2025.

Baltimore's Inner Harbor experienced an oil spill on Friday morning, prompting an immediate investigation by environmental officials and the U.S. Coast Guard to identify the source.
The occurrence of the spill coincided with the arrival of ships for the SAIL250 Maryland event, with a visible oil sheen noted on the water's surface early Friday.
This incident is not the first of its kind for the harbor. In June 2025, nearly 5,000 gallons of diesel were spilled from Johns Hopkins University following an overfilling of emergency generators. This earlier event also resulted in a noticeable sheen and necessitated a significant cleanup effort, with the university pledging to cover the costs.
Further back, in 2020, approximately 50 gallons of fuel oil seeped into the harbor, leading to a cleanup operation coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard.
