Baby's Death Spurs Road Safety Call After Ice Crash

A devastating car crash in January 2025 claimed the life of seven-month-old Ayan Sediqi. The incident occurred on the A1 south of Grantham, Lincolnshire, when the vehicle he occupied skidded on a patch of ice and collided with a tree. The inquest revealed that a blocked drainage pipe was the cause of the ice formation on the road.
Greater Lincolnshire coroner Jayne Wilkes has issued a report calling for improved public awareness on how to report hazardous road conditions. She stated there was a "lack of public awareness as to who, where and how motorists should report circumstances which present a risk of immediate danger to road users."
Notably, National Highways, Lincolnshire County Council, and Lincolnshire Police had received no reports of ice on the road on the day of the crash or in the preceding two months. However, following a police appeal, multiple drivers came forward describing previous instances of skidding on ice at the same spot, suggesting the road had not been gritted.
