28 Apr
Summary
- A healthy baby girl was born on a Delta flight before landing.
- Paramedics on board assisted with the surprise in-flight delivery.
- The mother and baby were healthy upon arrival and taken to a hospital.

A Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland, Oregon, became an impromptu maternity ward when a passenger gave birth just minutes before landing. The healthy 5-1/2 pound baby girl arrived two weeks ahead of schedule, surprising her mother, Ashley Blair, who was flying to Oregon to be with her own mother.
Two paramedics, Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell, who were returning from vacation, provided crucial assistance. They improvised with blankets from other passengers and a shoelace to manage the delivery, including tying off the umbilical cord. The flight attendants also played a key role in preparing the space.
