Tragic news emerged from western Austria on Saturday, January 17, as two separate avalanches in the Salzburg Pongau region resulted in five fatalities. Heavy snowfall had preceded the dangerous conditions, prompting repeated warnings from mountain rescue services.
The first fatal avalanche occurred near Bad Hofgastein at an altitude of about 7,200 feet, claiming the life of a lone female skier. Tragically, about 90 minutes later, a second, devastating avalanche struck the Gastein Valley.
This second snow slide swept away seven individuals, leading to four more deaths and injuring two others, one seriously. An extensive emergency response, including helicopters and dog teams, was deployed. Officials expressed deep sympathy for the victims' families, emphasizing the severe current avalanche risk.
