2 Mar
Summary
- East coast and central Australia received a year's worth of rain in days.
- Severe weather warnings issued for Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Darwin.
- A 47-year-old motorcyclist died after being swept away in floodwaters.

A severe weather event is impacting the entire east coast and central parts of Australia, with some regions experiencing a year's worth of rainfall in just a few days. Torrential downpours have led to flash flooding and widespread disruption.
Severe weather warnings for life-threatening flash floods have been issued for Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Darwin. The Bureau of Meteorology indicated that a tropical low, designated 29U, moving from the Coral Sea, has already brought significant rainfall to areas between Cairns and Townsville. Meteorologists anticipate hundreds more millimeters of rain could fall in the coming days.
Tragically, a 47-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross Fodgen's Creek in Eurelia, Southern Flinders Ranges. Authorities have issued flood warnings for numerous rivers across Queensland and northern New South Wales.
The intensity of the rainfall is described as some of the most significant in over a decade, with multiple regions potentially experiencing their heaviest rain since 2011. The Northern Territory Government has invoked emergency powers for areas south of Tennant Creek, establishing an operations centre in Alice Springs to manage the response to worsening conditions.
Emergency services in Victoria responded to 176 requests for assistance over the past 24 hours, primarily for fallen trees, building damage, and flood assistance, with Mildura being the most affected area. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from floodwaters due to the ongoing risks and disruptions.
