Atlanta Cracks Down on Right Turns on Red

Atlanta is implementing a ban on right turns on red lights, a measure designed to increase pedestrian safety. This initiative is particularly timely as the city prepares to host the World Cup, anticipating a surge in international visitors who may be unfamiliar with this driving practice. City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond highlighted the potential for the new rule to save lives amidst increased foot traffic.

The decision follows data indicating a concerning number of accidents, with 27 severe incidents linked to right turns on red lights occurring between 2013 and 2022. Pedestrian advocates, like Dan Hourigan of Midtown Alliance, support the ban, emphasizing its role in creating a safer environment for walking, biking, and scooting throughout the city, not just during major events.

The ordinance was passed over a year ago, but its enforcement and visibility are being heightened. Fines for non-compliance can reach up to $265. The installation of 'No Turn on Red' signs at numerous downtown and Midtown intersections is underway, aiming to reduce crashes and safeguard pedestrians from potential harm.
