Arunachal Pradesh is grappling with a severe crisis as ongoing floods and landslides have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread devastation. As of Thursday evening, seven lives have been lost, and 29 people have sustained injuries, with over 100,000 residents affected across the northeastern state. Multiple districts, including East Kameng and Upper Siang, have reported fresh incidents of flooding and landslides in the past 24 hours, causing extensive damage to houses, roads, and agricultural land.
Infrastructure across the state has suffered heavily, with damages reported to irrigation projects, bridges, and retaining walls in various affected districts. Upper Siang remains the worst-hit district, followed by Siang and Kra Daadi. In response to the escalating situation, the India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across Arunachal Pradesh for the next three days, issuing an 'orange' alert for several districts.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant due to the risk of landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging. While heavy rainfall is expected to persist through Saturday, weather conditions are anticipated to gradually improve from Sunday onwards, with only light to moderate rain expected by Monday. The cumulative loss to agriculture and horticulture has also increased substantially, impacting hundreds of hectares of land.
