Mudslide Threatens Apartment: Evacuation Ordered
15 Oct
Summary
- Apartment complex residents evacuated due to mudslide.
- Unscientific excavation caused landslide near apartment.
- School construction halted until safety is ensured.
District collector Anju K S has ordered the immediate evacuation of residents from the PRS Lake Ville apartment complex in Akkulam. This action follows a significant mudslide that has left the building vulnerable. The landslide occurred just 4 meters from the apartment complex, resulting from excavation on the adjacent Good Shepherd School premises for a new building.
The collapse destroyed a retaining wall and caused major cracks, while a 50-meter section of the road in front of the apartments caved in to a depth of 15 meters. The collector, also the head of the district disaster management authority, noted that the school's excavation was unscientific and lacked necessary safety measures and a retaining wall, contrary to permit conditions.
The school management is responsible for providing temporary accommodation for the affected families. Construction activities will only resume after the site is secured and the danger to the apartment complex is eliminated. The public works corporation and other relevant departments will review the school's safety proposal before approval.
