Anglia Square Demolition: Asbestos Fears Cleared
9 Apr
Summary
- Council confirms hazardous materials removed before demolition.
- Test samples confirm no asbestos presence at Anglia Square.
- Site demolition to make way for 1,100 new affordable homes.

Norwich City Council has officially stated that hazardous materials have been removed from the Anglia Square shopping complex demolition site, dispelling recent public anxieties. These clarifications came after social media images, shared by an individual trespassing on the property, sparked rumors of asbestos contamination.
Despite complaints lodged with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), council officials confirmed that subsequent inspections and test samples from pipe lagging definitively showed no asbestos present. The council emphasized that prior to demolition, two separate, thorough inspections were conducted, and any identified asbestos was safely removed and recorded.
The demolition of the 1960s-built Anglia Square, undertaken by DSM Demolition, commenced in November. This process is intended to prepare the site for the construction of 1,100 much-needed new and affordable homes for the city's residents.
The council also issued a warning against unlawful break-ins at the demolition site, citing the dangers to individuals and potential delays and increased costs to the project. Safe demolition work is expected to continue to facilitate the development of new housing.
