29 Oct
Summary
- Ambulance carrying a critically injured patient was stopped for VP's security.
- Police registered a case against the ambulance driver, alleging rash driving.
- The driver lodged complaints with the Home Minister and Human Rights Commission.
An ambulance transporting a critically injured patient to a specialized hospital was allegedly held up by police on October 16th in Kozhikode. The delay occurred due to traffic restrictions implemented for Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan's visit to the city.
The ambulance driver reported that officers stopped and checked the vehicle, despite being informed of the patient's critical state and the urgent need for passage. Even after the Vice President's convoy had passed, the ambulance was reportedly denied immediate clearance.
Following the incident, police registered a case against the driver, Shihab, citing charges of rash driving and failure to stop when signaled. The patient, Jayan Naduthodika, had sustained severe head injuries from a motorcycle fall and required specialized care.
In response, the ambulance driver has filed formal complaints with the Home Minister and the Kerala State Human Rights Commission. The city police commissioner has also initiated an inquiry, requesting an explanation from the sub-inspector involved in registering the first information report.
