Aliganj Fire Tragedy: Demolition Notice Issued
24 Jun
Summary
- LDA pasted a demolition notice on the building after a fire killed 15 people.
- The building was approved for residential use but allegedly used for commercial purposes.
- LDA is investigating officials for alleged negligence in prior actions.

Two days following a tragic fire in Aliganj that resulted in 15 fatalities, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has served a demolition notice on the building's owner. The notice, pasted on Wednesday, cites alleged violations of building bylaws and unauthorized commercial operations. The three-story structure, originally approved for residential use, was reportedly housing commercial activities, including an animation and gaming institute, at the time of the fire on Monday.
The LDA Vice-Chairman confirmed a hearing is scheduled for July 7, with the owner's response to be reviewed before a final decision. The authority has also established seven teams to identify and address unauthorized commercial activities and bylaw violations across the city. Records indicate the building faced similar scrutiny in 2016 for construction beyond the sanctioned plan and commercial operations, though a subsequent demolition order was withdrawn.
An inquiry is underway into the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of the 2016 demolition order and the subsequent inaction despite continued commercial use. Disciplinary proceedings are being initiated against officials suspected of negligence. Investigators are examining building regulations, fire-safety norms, clearances, and permissions, with four arrests made so far, including the building owner.
