- Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to climate change-exacerbated disasters.

Severe weather across Afghanistan over the past four days has claimed the lives of 28 people and left 49 others injured. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority reported that storms and heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding, landslides, and lightning strikes.
The extreme conditions have caused extensive damage, destroying 130 homes and affecting 436 more. Additionally, over 240 animals perished, and 93 kilometers of roads were rendered unusable. Irrigation canals and agricultural land also suffered significant destruction.
This event underscores Afghanistan's heightened vulnerability to extreme weather. Earlier this year, similar conditions, including heavy snowfall and flash floods, resulted in numerous fatalities. Decades of conflict, poor infrastructure, economic hardship, deforestation, and climate change collectively amplify the impact of these disasters.
