A serious head-on collision occurred on the A1 in Northumberland on Saturday, February 21, leaving eight people injured. Seven of those injured were taken to hospital for treatment. The incident took place near Purdey Lodge, prompting a significant emergency response.
North East Ambulance Service dispatched four ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crew after being alerted around 7:30 PM. Two patients suffered serious head and leg injuries, while the remaining six had minor injuries. Seven were transported to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington, and one to RVI in Newcastle.
The A1 was closed for several hours between B1340 (Denwick) and the A1167 (Berwick Upon Tweed) due to the crash. Northumbria Police and National Highways also attended the scene to manage traffic and assist with the incident response. The road remained closed until Sunday morning.
