Nearly 100 Australian soldiers sustained injuries when a temporary grandstand unexpectedly collapsed at Lavarack Barracks in North Queensland. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon as soldiers were posing for a routine group photograph, leading to a significant emergency response.
Queensland Ambulance Service reported treating 96 patients at the scene. While 17 soldiers were transported to Townsville University Hospital in stable condition, another 41 required treatment at a nearby medical centre. Most injuries were described as non-life-threatening, primarily cuts and musculoskeletal issues affecting the arms and legs.
The Australian Defence Force confirmed the collapse during a "routine group photograph" and stated that no soldiers suffered life-threatening injuries. Support services have been activated for affected personnel and their families. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future occurrences.
Fire services also assisted at the scene, confirming that no individuals were trapped. The 2nd Cavalry Regiment was involved in the photoshoot when the makeshift grandstand became unstable. Families of the affected soldiers are being notified.
