2 Feb
Summary
- At least 88 fatalities have been confirmed across multiple states due to winter storms.
- Deaths resulted from hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, and weather-related accidents.
- Another Arctic blast is forecast, with dangerous wind chills expected in the eastern US.

Winter storms have tragically resulted in at least 88 reported deaths across several U.S. states, including Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, and New York City. The fatalities stem from causes such as hypothermia, suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, and weather-related accidents, highlighting the severe risks associated with prolonged cold and power outages.
Two recent winter systems have impacted the nation, with the first affecting the Northeast from January 24 to 26 and a subsequent system bringing snow and ice to the South. This dual onslaught has exacerbated dangerous conditions, leaving hundreds of thousands of utility customers without power, particularly in Southern states.
Officials continue to tally the full impact, with some deaths still under investigation from last weekend's events. Mississippi reported two additional deaths, bringing its total to 23, while Kentucky confirmed 15 fatalities. New York City recorded 13 cold-related deaths. Forecasters anticipate further Arctic air reinforcing dangerous wind chills across the eastern half of the country, with heavy snow and strong winds predicted for areas including the southern Appalachians and Carolinas.
